There’s something about fall that makes parents feel like we’re hitting the reset button. The backpacks come out, calendars fill up, bedtimes get a little more serious, and suddenly we’re back to packing daily lunches and running to extra-curriculars. After the freedom of summer, the return to routines can feel a little chaotic, but there’s also something comforting about getting back into a rhythm.

This issue is all about giving kids the space to become who they’re meant to be. “Let them climb” takes a thoughtful look at risky play and why giving children opportunities to test their limits, take manageable risks, and figure things out for themselves is so important. We’re also heading a long way from Grey/Bruce with “From Grey/Bruce to the Camino de Santiago,” the story of a local mom who took her tweens on a remarkable 280 kilometre backpacking journey. It’s an inspiring reminder that some of the best family memories come from stepping outside our comfort zones and that our kids can always surprise us.

Back at home, our article on pelvic health explores an often-overlooked foundation of childhood well-being, and how it can impact their comfort, confidence, and everyday lives. Then, our nutrition feature offers practical ideas to get eating habits back on track after a summer of ice cream, road-trip snacks, and meals whenever we could fit them in.

And finally, “Growing apart, together” takes a look at one of the biggest transitions a parent can face – your child leaving home. We spend so much time preparing our kids to leave that we rarely talk about how much the transition changes us.

So here’s to new routines, a little more independence, and remembering that growing up – and parenting – means learning to let go, one step at a time.
